George Gershwin bewegte sich als Komponist leichtfüßig zwischen verschiedenen Genres. Er komponierte als einer der vielleicht genialsten Melodien-Erfinder seiner Generation unzählige Songs für Musicals und Filme, deren Melodien niemals ins Banale abglitten. Seine Musicalhits ließen ihn zum gefeierten Broadway-Liebling aufsteigen. Gleichzeitig hatte George Gershwin musikalisch höhere Ambitionen. Die Erstaufführung der Rhapsody in Blue (1924) bescherte ihm weltweite Bekanntheit als Komponist „neuartig-authentischer amerikanischer Klassik“. In der Folge komponierte er sinfonische Konzertwerke, u.a. das Klavierkonzert in F-Dur, die sinfonische Dichtung Ein Amerikaner in Paris und zwei Opern (Blue Monday bereits 1922, Porgy & Bess 1935).

Heute gilt Gershwin als einer der zentralen Wegbereiter der zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Klassik und des „Sinfonik Jazz“.  An diesem Treffpunkt von Jazz und Klassik setzt auch das Ensemble catfish row an und führt die Zuhörenden durch die Musik und das Leben des Komponisten. Musical- und Filmsongs sowie eine Kurzfassung der Oper Porgy & Bess erklingen in bisher noch nie gehörter Weise.

As a composer, George Gershwin moved light-footedly between different genres. Perhaps one of the most ingenious melody inventors of his generation, he composed countless songs for musicals and films whose melodies never slipped into the banal. His musical hits made him a celebrated Broadway favorite. At the same time, George Gershwin had higher musical ambitions. The first performance of Rhapsody in Blue (1924) brought him worldwide fame as a composer of “novel, authentic American classical music”. He went on to compose symphonic concert works, including the Piano Concerto in F major, the symphonic poem An American in Paris and two operas (Blue Monday in 1922, Porgy & Bess in 1935).
Today, Gershwin is regarded as one of the central pioneers of contemporary American classical music and “symphonic jazz”.  The catfish row ensemble starts at this meeting point of jazz and classical music and guides listeners through the music and life of the composer. Musical and film songs as well as an abridged version of the opera Porgy & Bess are performed in a way that has never been heard before.
